Opening Day

I have no idea how or when the Knolls Day Camp in Nanuet, New York started. I can only assume the Adrian and the Patkin families were somehow related a generation before my time. All I know for sure is that the majority of my childhood summers were spent on a converted farm located on Convent Road.

I talk about summer camp like it happened yesterday and not 30 years ago. I figured, before the memory banks give out I better get these memories in writing.

This blog is dedicated to the friends I made each summer. Thanks for seeing me through that period of transition.

Heya! I attended the Knolls back in the day. I think I went for about 3 years, from 74 to 76, or something like that. I should ask my mom. She was the counselor for the senior girls for some of the time, and worked in the office other years.

I just happen to be thinking about the old days and I thought I would look up to see if anything was under the Knolls Day camp and sure enough WOW! I know alot of those people on the pictures that are posted and infact some of them I still keep intouch with. My mom worked there for many years. My brother & I went there and worked there. My brother married an alumni from the camp.
It was nice to see - thank you.

Hi, OMG, I attended Knolls for 2 years I think. 76-78. I am in utter shock at how much you remember! Wow, I think my fondest memories were of the cookouts and horseback riding. I was terrified of horses and of course they put me on mean old Joe who just had his way with me. lol
I also remember taking my swimming test so I could swim in the deep end. It was a long trek but I made it...Thank you sooo much for this site. Hello and God's Blessing on all!

I was part of the group that you listed. My name was Christina Bertolacci. I was the girl who played taps for those last couple of years. I think you are the Scott that I remember. You lived in NJ like a lot of us. Michelle Vogt lived across the street from me and I actually brought her there. I remember Robin Roth, Cara Evans, Aileen. Lori Jerie Delvecchio also lived in Saddle Brook and we were friends from camp and than all through HS. I remember those sleepovers 1 in July and 1 in August. A few of us snuck off to ride the horses bareback. Wed. cookouts were great. Uncle Irwin was my driver. I actually babysat for him throughout the school year and he tutored me in 1978/1979. I attended from 1974-1978. I think you lived in Hasbrook Heights, NJ. I think my last year there was our CIT year. Alot of the name you listed are familar. Like you I remember a lot, but there are also a lot of blanks.

Looking at the pics u posted. I'm in them. I remember you and a lot of those people. It was an "awkward" period for me. Growing into myself. In a group photo I am to the right with straight brown hair and a blue t shirt that said smith school saddle brook. I also wore glasses.

I have created a Facebook page for Knolls day Camp. Hopefully that (and your support) will attract more folks than your blog post. If you know of other places on the web that would be interested in the Facebook group, please spread the word. :)

Hello Scott - Thanks for remembering so much. I was your counselor, and drove one of the mini-buses with Aileen and Danny Riordan, Risa Roth, Cara Evans, Larry Gual and a host of other New City kids.

Do you remember the "talent show"? You guys did not want to participate, until we came up the the song "The Knolls Camp Hamburger Blues"... The parents loved it, if not the administration....

In my last year, we were the "Gold Lions" and had a blast at color war. So many fond memories of all of you guys...

All the best - David Leibman

Dave. You’re a legend if only in the minds of a dozen or so Post middle aged men. What was most memorable was the sleep over and the story you told about some fictional mass murderer guy named Mad Mountain Jake. That story scared the Crap out just about all of us.
Those were good times. And yes, the passionate competition during colorwars was life changing.
I only keep in touch with Mike Coch. Ironically, I was with him the night that I saw your post here. Thanks for responding and remembering.
Best to you,
Scott
